Contractor hired to build NSB Marine Discovery Center Trail
On behalf of the City of New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County Government has designed and will construct a trailhead at the Marine Discovery Center. A trail extension connecting the center to the city trail at the North Causeway. On Tuesday, the Volusia County Council approved a construction contract to get the project underway.
The county is building the facilities at the city’s request. It will then turn it over to the city and the Marine Discovery Center for maintenance responsibility once completed. The project will consist of a trailhead with restroom facilities on the Marine Discovery Center. The paved trail will start at the trailhead and run along the southern part of the site to the west side of Barracuda Boulevard and then down to the south side of the causeway.
The County Council awarded a $660,510.50 contract to Pierson-based Built-Rite Construction of Central Florida to build the facilities. The council agreed to set aside an additional $132,102 to cover any unforeseen cost increases that may arise during the construction.
The project is being funded by Volusia County ECHO trails funds and is expected to take seven months to complete.
